The 60 days that the Florida Legislature meets each year include weekends and holidays, and our legislators have indeed agreed not to meet this coming week, due to the religious holidays. When they return on April 14th, they will face a full plate of controversial education legislation regarding private school vouchers; charter school expansion and contract uniformity; student, teacher, and school evaluation and accountability; local control of textbook selection, arming school personnel, granting in-state tuition to undocumented students; and funding specifics. Senate and House positions on many of these issues are divergent, surprising for this point of the session. Given that the last scheduled day of the session is May 2nd, it's now or never if you wish to make your voice heard on the issues that concern you.

Speaking of local education funding, the most important bill you've never heard of is CS/HB 651 (Value Adjustment Board Proceedings), now on the House Second Reading Calendar. Thanks to efforts by members of the Miami Dade delegation, this bill now proposes to regulate property tax "secret Santas"--agents who, unbeknownst to homeowners, file property tax assessment appeals on their behalf, and then hope to collect commissions out of the tax rebates to homeowners whose appeals are successful. During the appeal process, which can be stretched out over months and years, homeowners are required to pay only a portion of their property taxes. Why is this important? In allocating education dollars, the state assumes that individual school districts collect 95% of estimated local property tax revenues. Because of a two-year backlog in local property tax appeals (many filed by the secret Santas), our Miami-Dade school district is collecting significantly less than this required 95%; the projected income shortfall for the coming year could amount to as much as $40 million. If you agree that that the district should be able to collect each and every property tax penny that it is legitimately due in a timely fashion, now is the time to urge Florida legislators to support CS/HB 651.

PTSA General Membership Meeting - April 24th at 9:15 am
April 24th at 9:15am; we will have our elections for PTSA board members for the 2014-2015 year. In addition, a special presentation by Ritchie Lucas,"The Student Success Project; Every student is a success story waiting to happen"

From Ritchie Lucas and the award-winning marketing firm Think Factory, comes The Student Success Project. This bold new "real life" program empowers students to understand, pursue, and achieve success both in the classroom and out. With success being relative, The Student Success Project shows students how to take control of their own success path, in the classroom, and beyond. Success is different for each student and The Student Success Project provides the tools to take true ownership of their lives while becoming more positive, self-motivational, self-reliant, and confident. We all want our kids to become successful. The Student Success Project teaches them the way to get it done. There is a real strategy in learning how to grab success. Knowledge is a result of learning. Success is the result of doing the right things with the knowledge.

Jessica Schwartzman Community Service Project:
Jessica Schwartzman, currently an 11th grader at Palmetto Senior High has begun her community service project at Palmetto. Her project entitled "R^2- Ronald's Relievers" deals with the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald house is a place for families to stay while their child is undergoing treatment for a serious medical condition. These houses lessen the burden for over 7 million families each and every year. These houses are located in 58 countries across the globe. Due to the fact that treatments are costly, these families arrive with little to no necessities required for daily living. Ronald McDonald has a wish list and her project is to collect the items needed to help these families. (Information coming) to see the wish list and specific locations to drop the items off. There are collection boxes in the rooms of Mrs. Salas (206), Ms. Spivak (100), and Mrs.Meyers (400). More boxes will be placed within the coming weeks. Jessica and the Ronald McDonald families greatly appreciate your support.
Thank You, Jessica Schwartzman.

Mac’s Library, a community service project by three junior students, is currently collecting new school supplies and gently used children’s books and clothing for the 300+ children living in South Dade’s migrant labor camps.  Collection boxes are in 25 classrooms and the main office, and some teachers are giving extra credit for donations.  Boxes will be in classrooms through March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day).  These students will also have a table to collect these items at the 5th Annual Community Bike Ride Day at the Pinecrest Community Center on March 15, and a collection box is permanently available inside the Community Center.

Capstone Cambridge students Need Research Mentors

Capstone Cambridge students Need Research Mentors: List of fields of study

Capstone Cambridge students will be researching for their 20 page research projects due at the end of this year. At certain times during this research process, students may need direction from experts in the field. It would be beneficial for the students to have mentors for their projects to answer questions and provide guidance. If you know of any specialists that may have expertise in any of the areas below, please contact the teacher listed by email or phone. Please give the name, email or phone number of the potential mentor with the topic or area of the mentor’s expertise. This is not a big time commitment. Students would contact the mentor by email or phone to get guidance on resources or clarification on topics within his/her area of expertise. This would only occur several times in the research process.

If you have any names or questions, you can contact the teacher, Beth Bagwell at: Her phone number is: 305-235-1360 extension 2010. If you call, please do so after school (2:20pm)

The Paul J. Smith Summer Music Program at Les Cayes, Haiti
On October 18, 2012, Paul J. Smith, a bright light at Miami Palmetto Senior High School passed away after a valiant struggle with cancer. Mr. Smith taught marching band, symphonic band, concert band and jazz band for 15 years. “He was a much-loved, kind, compassionate, accessible teacher,” says Bob Longfield, Music Department Chairperson and Paul Smith’s longtime associate.

This past summer, the Miami Palmetto family started a music program at Les Enfants De Dieu Orphanage in Les Cayes, Haiti in honor of Mr. Paul Smith. The orphanage, created in 2008, nurtures and educates orphans in this small town. The orphanage currently houses 28 children. Through The Paul J. Smith Music Program, we endeavor to provide musical instruments and music education to these disadvantaged children with the hope of enriching their lives.
